Abstract
The present study aimed to present meta-analytic reviews of the effectiveness of self-esteem enhancement programs for the elderly by systematically examining previous research findings. Data were collected from 76 research articles and theses conducted from 1990 to 2013. The collected data were analyzed using CMA 2.0. Major research findings are as follows. First, the average program effect size was very high. Second, there was no statistically significant difference among the types of self-esteem enhancement programs. Third, the magnitude of effect size was significantly different in terms of the number of a program session, showing that the highest effect size was presented in the self-esteem enhancement program with 10-19 session. However, the length of program implementation made no statistically significant differences in the magnitude of effect size. Lastly, the significant difference of the magnitude of effect size was not found in the characteristics of program participants(general elders, dementia elders, sick elders/ facility elders, home-stay elders/urban, rural, others). These findings support the effectiveness of self-esteem enhancement programs and could be used in implementing and developing a self-esteem enhancement program. Implications of the research findings were discussed.
